Abstract In this work we study the use of relay selection within amplify-and-forward two-path half duplex transmission with inter-relay self interference cancellation realised at one of the active relays. We consider in particular the effect of uncertainty in the inter-relay channel state information at this relay. We show that such error is not so significant at higher signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) however it is a problem at lower SNRs. In order to solve this problem an interference-based relay selection scheme which accounts for the interference level is exploited. End-to-end bit error rate evaluations confirm the advantage of using the interference-based relay selection scheme over the conventional max-min approach.
