Abstract Band-notched characteristics of a printed monopole ultra wideband (UWB) antenna, operated in the scenarios of freespace and next to metallic objects are investigated. The antenna consists of a half-disk shaped structure combined with an inverted isosceles trapezoid structure. To achieve the dual band-notched behaviour in freespace, a couple of open-ended quarter guided wavelength slits placed closely to each other are employed on the radiator. In the case when the antenna operated in proximity to metallic objects, the same dual band-notched antenna design is considered, whereas a ground plane with an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is used to be closely positioned underneath of the antenna. To validate the concept, a prototype of dual band-notched UWB antenna is designed, fabricated and tested. The simulated and measured results of the antenna are presented and discussed. Moreover, the simulated results of the frequency band-notched antenna with EBG ground plane are demonstrated. The results confirm that this antenna design can also be used in operation next metallic object application when integrated with the EBG ground.
