Abstract Design and analysis of compact coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed ultra wideband (UWB) antennas are presented. Two designs are proposed. The first design the antenna has a simple structure consisting of a hexagonal patch, and then a tuning stub is added in the back, which is used as band notch. The second design uses a clubs patch UWB antenna. The antennas are fabricated using FR4 substrate with 1.6 mm thickness and dielectric constant of 4.4. The hexagonal and clubs patch antennas have dimensions of 21mm×20mm×1.6mm. The return loss of the fabricated clubs patch antenna is measured and compared with the simulated one. There is a good agreement between the measured and simulated results. for hexagonal patch antenna, the return loss better than -10 dB over operational bandwidth of 11.4 GHz from 5.34 GHz to 16.7, for hexagonal for band notch design, the bandwidth is 10 GHz from 10 GHz to 20 GHz and for the clubs patch antenna the bandwidth is 13.61 GHz from 6.39 GHz to 20 GHz. The proposed antennas have relatively stable omni directional radiation pattern over the whole frequency ranges. To verify the suitability of the antenna for transmission and reception of narrow pulses group delay for the antenna with face-to-face antenna configuration is presented.
