Abstract In this work we present an analytical model that can be used to evaluate the dispersion effects and subsequent penalty for NRZ pulse transmission through a given length of fiber taking into account the finite bandwidth of a direct detection receiver. This is done by using a pulse shape that is similar to the shape of NRZ pulses but that its propagation through single mode fibers can be solved analytically. The model is evaluated by using numerical simulations to obtain values of the dispersion penalty for NRZ pulses, showing very good agreement.
