Abstract Recently, the interest in fuzzy transportation problems, where the variables, costs, supply and/or demands are vague and unclear, is increasing. In this paper, we propose a solution method for a general fully fuzzy transportation problem (FFTP), where fuzziness is represented by n-polygonal fuzzy number. The proposed method consists of two phases, Phase I is used to find a fuzzy initial basic feasible solution using a modified fuzzy version of the north-west corner method. Phase II is used to find an optimal solution starting from the initial solution found in the phase I, using an extension of the modified distribution method to deal with fuzzy numbers. Finally, a numerical example is given and solved by the proposed method, and compared with an existing method. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method gives more realistic solutions to the FFTP.
