This paper describes the RF units for a low cost and practical vector network analyzer (VNA). The instrument’s measurement range spans from 25 MHz up to 4000 MHz. The target is to design a VNA with cheap surface mount components and to run the device with a regular PC. The RF units of VNA include an onboard 32-bit micro processor which enables control parameters through serial port of PC. We present the system architecture, discuss sub-blocks and propose some possible applications and improvements.
