Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is now the third generation (3G) communication standard for mobile communications and will provide worldwide cov-erage, offering various high capacity types of services. The base-station transmitter plays a critical part in successful UMTS deployment. Unlike second generation (2G) Base-Station linear power amplifiers, that has low energy effi-ciency; UMTS requires the use of wideband high efficiency multi-carrier linear amplifiers. This paper presents a feed forward linearized transmitter that utilizes an additional amplifier efficiency boosting by using baseband crest factor reduction. The proposed transmitter architecture and digital signal processing algorithms allow the system have lower hardware cost and higher performance compared to conventional 2G base stations.
