Special Issue on Advances in Internet of Things and Smart Cities
Announced by: Dr. Mohammad M. Banat on Tuesday, 28 July 2020

Internet Technology Letters: Special Issue on Advances in Internet of Things and Smart Cities

Call for papers:

Internet of Things (IoT) is often considered as a technology meant to connect low processing smart devices. This information can be shared, processed, and analyzed for improving the performance of these devices. Smart city concept is based on a notion where all smart devices share their information and resources using a centralized ecosystem of devices. With the advent of smartphones, cloud computing, and edge computing, the processing, storage, and lightweight analytics capability of IoT and smart cities improved tremendously.

The number of devices in a smart city keeps changing. Therefore, the vendor-based approach for the development of smart devices often leads to compatibility issues. In order to address these challenges and to ensure smooth connectivity of these devices, vendor-agnostic approaches can be adopted through open-source software and software-defined networks (SDN), which can use isolation approaches for improved management and coordination of a device’s data and network planes.

Smart city infrastructures face numerous challenges. It includes the consideration to utilize edge computing for IoT analytics completely. However, most of the computation resources in edge computing are dependent on energy-hungry mobile devices. This leads to the credibility of the IoT technology in cases where the issue of lack of sufficient computational processing might lead to lower network resource availability.

IoT and Smart city trends are widely popular in the IT industry. A detailed study of systems, networks, and structures of IoT-enabled ecosystem is needed to exploit its potential benefits. However, there are several issues related to data acquisition, transmission, storage and processing, analytics, and management in smart cities. Therefore, extensive research is needed to identify and overcome the limitations in service quality and cost-effectiveness related constraints in smart cities.

Topics of interests:

The purpose of this Special Issue is to encourage submissions concerning IoT-related analytical studies which can contribute towards the improvement of smart devices, their integration, and deployment. We also welcome manuscripts presenting research related to IoTs interacting with other disciplines and technologies. We are actively seeking contributions in the best interest of the IoT research and development community. Topics to be included in this special issue include but not are limited to:

Big Data for IoT device analysis
Deep learning for integrated IoT systems
Industrial IoT
Autonomous Vehicles and Smart Cars
Cognitive IoT networks
Intelligent data processing techniques for information forensics in smart cities
IoT in education, surveillance, monitoring and e-health services
