Abstract Very recently a number of researchers have shown that optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) system is a potential solution for broadband wired communication systems. This paper has considered a cost effective solution of OCDMA system. It is a combined scheme of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), incoherent direct-sequence optical orthogonal code (OOC) systems and cheap transceiver components in passive optical networks (PON). An analytical model of error probability taking into account multiple-access interference (MAI), inter channel interference (ICI) due to large spectrum optical sources and hybrid WDM/OOC additional interference have been derived for receivers based on parallel interference cancellation (PIC) technique known to remove nondesired users’ contribution. The simulation results have shown a big improvement when using a PIC receiver compared to a CCR receiver in both cases of crosstalk and no crosstalk schemes. It has been point out the maximum number of users allowable per channel in order to guaranty a BER of 10-9.
