Abstract In this paper we explore the possibilities that how the Media Independent Handover (MIH) infrastructure and procedures originally meant for vertical handovers, can be used for horizontal handovers. We argue that using MIH we can speed up some of the time consuming operations like movement detection, registration and security procedures in mobility management protocols or to perform them before the handover starts. The idea is to use the different services provided by MIH to pre configure the mobile node with crucial parameters before its movement from one point of attachment to another to reduce the handover latency for horizontal handover.
