An Overview of Mobile WiMAX Technology

Summary

This tutorial looks at the most features introduced by the IEEE802.16e standard. The standard aims to support mobility up to vehicular speeds. IEEE 802.16e builds on previous WiMax standards, thus allowing the upgrade from Fixed Broadband Wireless Access, FBWA, systems to mobile service provision. The mobility procedures available in WiMax are outlined, along with the parameters required to plan HHO, MDHO and FBSS handovers. The measurement reporting and optimization of the handover process are discussed. Relations and interactions between QoS functional elements are discussed according to cross layer design. Scope & Objective: The objective of this tutorial is to provide a clear and concise technical introduction to mobile WiMax/IEEE 802.16e. The participant will have description of the major procedures of IEEE 802.16e. The tutorial is conveyed in two mutually harmonised parts. The first part deal with fundamentals and advanced features at mainly PHY and MAC layers with particular emphasis on cross layer whereas the second part focuses on mobility management. Outline • Overview of the IEEE 802.16 Standard • Evolution of IEEE 802.16 to 802.16e • Advanced Features of Mobile WiMAX • QoS Support 15 mn) • Mobility Management with WiMAX 45 mn) o Handoff management o Mobile IP and the application to WiMAX o Power management • Security) • Mobile WiMAX System Parameters • End-to-End Network Architecture of WiMAX• Mobile WiMAX-3G Comparisons) • Q\A-------
