Welcome to GC-CPE 2009
Welcome to the 2009 Global Congress on Communications, Propagation, and Electronics (GC-CPE 2009). This event is intended to represent a major forum for researchers, professionals and students from all over the world to meet in the beautiful and culturally rich city of Amman in Jordan to present their latest research results and to exchange new ideas and practical experiences.

Scope

GC-CPE 2009 main scope includes, but is not limited to the following areas: Data and Computer Communications; Optical Fiber Communications; Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation; Communication Circuits and Sub-Systems;

GC-CPE 2009 is planned to feature special sessions, keynote talks and tutorial sessions by leading experts, paper presentations, poster shows, demo shows, discussion panels, as well as other interesting technical activities.

Jordan

Coming to Jordan represents a unique opportunity to witness the embrace of history and future. As small in area as it is, Jordan has a rich history spanning thousands of years, a history that a tourist can only admire. Places like Petra and the Dead Sea are only examples of the many one-of-a-kind places to visit in Jordan. On top of all that, Jordan, as a peaceful country in a turbulent area, enjoys extreme levels of safety and security. Jordanian people are internationally known for generosity, hospitality and cultural awareness and tolerance.

Amman

Amman, the beautiful capital of Jordan, is a living model of a large and modern city that has all kinds of tourist attractions.

FTTX Overview (When Fiber Lights the Way to Next Generation Broadband Networks)

Summary

Broadband applications continue to grow at a rapid pace. New infrastructure is required to meet bandwidth needs. To have access to wider bandwidths with low costs, a network access technology is needed in order to connect broadband transmission lines, over optical fiber, with the end users, guaranteeing QoS for all the applications. Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) has emerged as the fastest growing broadband access technology. Introducing the fiber in the local loop was envisaged nearly 20 years ago. As the quality of the optical fiber was improving, efficient transmitters and receivers appeared, it seemed possible to build an access network that would be based on the optical technology. Due to the lack of active units in the light path the architecture of the system was simple, cost effective and offered bandwidth that was not, and still is not, possible to achieve by other access methods. The deployment of optical fiber in an access network can be achieved in multiple ways. In fact, many access technologies are commonly referred to as FTTX(with X could be Building, Curb, Cabinet or Home) when in fact, they are simply combinations of optical fiber and twisted pair or coaxial cable networks. Fiber to the Home (FTTH) is simply the 100 percent deployment of optical fiber in the access network. It is commonly deployed in two specific configurations. In the first one, fiber is dedicated to each user in the access network and called a point-to point (PTP) network. In the second, one fiber is shared (via splitters) among a set number of users. This is called a Point to Multipoint (PTMP) Network or passive optical network (PON). The main purpose of this tutorial is to cover the evolution of the fiber (FTTX) and its vital role in the development of the future broadband network.
