Biography
Sundar Thirumalai an accomplished early-career materials engineer, who has studied/ worked in 6 EU countries and India. He is also an ambitious people-oriented professional networker, who has traveled to 24 countries for various professional motives. He did his undergraduate studies in ceramics at Anna University, Chennai, India. Thereafter, he moved to Europe in the year 2012 to study materials science & engineering masters at Grenoble INP (France) and TU-Darmstadt (Germany), as a part of the Erasmus Mundus Master program supported by the European Commission Agency. Subsequently, he worked at a research consultancy-based company based in Leoben (Austria), where he had consulted on a project involving the leading bearing material manufacturing company. Thereafter, he moved to Switzerland to work at the world-famous ETH-Zurich as a research assistant for a year. From Jan 2016 onwards, he is employed at the University of Cambridge as a Marie Curie Early stage researcher-cum-doctoral assistant in the Materials Science & Metallurgy department and he closely works with the Engineering department as well. His topic of expertise include: PVD coatings, electrodeposited nanostructures/ nanocomposites, tribology, surface engineering, electroceramics, powder processing/ sintering and nanomechanical testing.
