Biography
Nicola Calabretta (M’2004) received the Bachelor’s degree and the M.S. degree, both in telecommunications engineering, from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. In 2004 he received the Ph.D. degree from COBRA Research Institute, the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He is currently working as researcher at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna University, Pisa, Italy.
In 1995, he visited the RAI Research Center (Italian broadcasting television), Turin, Italy, and developed an automatic procedure for designing and optimizing a 3-dB coupler at 2.5 GHz in microstrip technology for an antenna system. In 1999 he won a scholarship for the European exchanging program Erasmus that enabled him to carry out his Master’s Thesis at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, where he has investigated a novel cost-effective system for monitoring WDM channels. During the Ph.D. he investigated all-optical signal processing in nonlinear medium to achieve functionalities for all-optical packet switched cross-connect nodes such as all-optical header recognition, all-optical synchronization and buffering.
Dr. Calabretta co-authored more than 150 papers published in international journals and conferences. He is currently acting as a Referee for several IEEE and IEE and OSA Journals. His fields of interest are all-optical signal processing for optical packet switching, semiconductor optical amplifier, all-optical wavelength conversion and regeneration, and advanced modulation formats for optical packet switching.
