Biography
Rajendran Sankaravelayuthan was born to his parents C. Sankaravelayuthan and N. Thanammal on 3rd December 1950 at Nagercoil, Tamilnadu, India. He had his schooling from Scott Christian Higher Secondary school, Nagercoil, Tamilnadu. He was graduated from S.T.Hindu College, Nagercoil which is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. He had his M.A. in linguistics from University of Kerala at Trivandrum in 1973 and PhD from University of Poona at Pune in 1978. He worked as a Project Assistant in Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, India from 30-1-1979 to 6-12-1980, as Research Associate (Sponsored by University Grants Commission) in Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, Pune, India from 12-12-1980 to 9-9-1983, as a Research Officer in Language Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, Calcutta, India from 12-9-1983 to 19-1-1989, as Assistant professor, Associate Professor and Professor from 23-1-1989 to 30-6-2011 in Department of Linguistics, Tamil University, Thanjavur, India. He had under taken a number of Research projects and completed them successfully during his academic career in Tamil University Thanjavur. A few of them are: A Thesaurus for Modern Tamil, Word-formation in Tamil (UGC sponsored project), Electronic Thesaurus of Tamil and Creation Generative lexicon from MRDs in Tamil (UGC sponsored project). He had undertaken the projects such as Word Net for Tamil, Indian Language to Indian language Machine Translation (Malayalam-Tamil) and Indian Language Corpora Initiative (Hindi-Tamil) funded by Department of electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India.
After his retirement from Tamil University he has joined in Amrita Vishwa Vidyappetham, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India as a Visiting Professor on 7th July 2011 and continue working there till date. He is involved in DIT funded projects such as ‘English to Indian Language Machine Translation system (Tamil-English)’ and ‘Development of Dravidian WordNet: An Integrated WordNet for Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam’ (as co-investigator) and ‘Computing tools for Tamil language Teaching and learning’ (as co-investigator) funded by Tamil virtual academy, Tamilnadu, Chennai. He has developed a visual onto-thesaurus for Tamil which ready for launching in the internet for the users.
He had supervised nearly 25 students for PhD and 40 students for M.Phil during his academic career in Tamil University. He has published 100 research papers and 15 books.
