Abstract The performance of image-retrieval Web services can be enhanced through the reduction of payload size, in particular, image sizes. This can be achieved by several ways such as image compression. Compression itself can be optimised further. In this article we study the influence of image dimensions, more specifically, the impact of the aspect ratio on the compression ratio. The goal is to benefit from the correlation between image compression ratio and image aspect ratio (width to height). This allows reshaping images in order to enhance their compression ratio. This in turn increases the performance of image-retrieval Web service and their QoS.
