Title Cross-layer architecture for video transmission over wireless multimedia networks
Authors Prof. Lung-Jen Wang, National Pingtung University, Pingtung County, Taiwan
Mr. Cheng-En Wu, National Pingtung Institute of Commerce, Pingtung County, Taiwan
Abstract A novel IEEE 802.11e standard will be used to support the quality of service (QoS) for wireless networks, but it is still unable to achieve an efficient bandwidth resource management in the application of wireless multimedia networks. In this paper, a new cross-layer architecture based on the hierarchical protocol structure is proposed to improve the video transmission over wireless multimedia networks. In addition, a dynamic bandwidth measurement approach is used to adjust the available bandwidth resources immediately. The proposed cross-layer approach uses the receiving feedback parameters from other layers for the current communication protocol of wireless multimedia networks. Furthermore, a scalable video coding scheme is proposed for multimedia video. Finally, it is shown by NS2 simulations that the proposed method yields an efficient performance for wireless multimedia networks, e.g. the transmission delay time is reduced at least 50%.
