Traditional healthcare systems are no longer able to provide adequate healthcare services to a large percentage of growing population, especially in underdeveloped countries. Rapid development of mobile and communication technologies can be used to enhance healthcare systems in these countries. This paper describes possible applications of mobile technology in the health sector in rural areas. In addition, some successful projects
are described altogether with the detailed general WBAN system structure they are based on. Furthermore, current challenges that need to be solved in order to be more widely accepted and used are addressed.
