Biography A/Prof. Elizabeth (Liz) New undertook her undergraduate and Masters studies at the University of Sydney before completing her PhD studies in 2010 at the University of Durham (UK). Liz was then a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2012, she returned to the University of Sydney, holding an ARC DECRA from 2012-2014, and a Westpac Research Fellowship from 2016-2019. Her research focussing on the development of small molecule chemical sensors, based on fluorescence or MRI. She has reported ten novel sensors, two of which are now commercially available, for oxidative stress, hypoxia and essential and therapeutic metal ions. Her sensors are being used in over 40 medical research groups in universities and industry around the world. Her awards for research and teaching including the 2019 Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year, 2018 Eureka 3M Emerging Leader Prize, and the 2016 RACI Chemistry Educator of the Year.
