Abstract In wireless communication, blind channel equalization is an important technique for counteracting the harmful effects of inter symbol interference (ISI) and noise. In this Letter, we propose a novel affine projection based constant modulus algorithm (AP-CMA) for blind equalization. As compared with the normalized least mean squares (NLMS) based CMA (NLMS-CMA), the AP-CMA has faster convergence and better tracking properties. Moreover, the AP-CMA has similar convergence and tracking properties as the well-known least squares (LS) based CMA (LS-CMA) with much reduced computational cost. Simulation results are presented to compare the AP-CMA with the NLMS-CMA and LS-CMA. Steady-state performance of AP-CMA is studied.
