Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Yarmouk University, Jordan, in 1984 and 1987, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 1995. His Ph.D. research was focused on optical beat interference countermeasures in SCM/WDMA networks.
Between 1987 and 1989 he was a communications engineer at the Jordanian Civil Defense Directorate. From 1989 to 1991 he was a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. During that period he worked on echo cancellation for voice band data transmission.
Since 1995 he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), where he is currently an associate professor. During his career at JUST, Dr. Banat has taught several courses in communications, electronics, and signal processing. He has supervised over 15 master students in wireless and optical fiber communications. Between September and December 2005 Dr. Banat was an Erasmus Mundus visiting professor at the Department of Signal Theory and Communications of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain.
Dr. Banat has been involved in several international research and teaching cooperation programs, including a TEMPUS project in wireless communications, a Swedish government project in MIMO wireless communication systems, and an NSF project in WDM optical networks. He is a reviewer for several leading publications including the IEEE Transactions on Communications, Wireless Communications, Vehicular Technology, and Broadcasting and the IEE Proceedings - Communications. He has served as the general chairman and/or TPC chairman of several international conferences on communications and related topics. He is also a reviewer and TPC member of several leading conferences, including ICC, Globecom, WCNC, VTC and PIMRC. He is the general chairman and technical program committee chairman of several high-profile international conferences organized in Jordan by Mosharaka for Researches and Studies.
