Title Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Private Satellite Network
Authors Mr. Ali A. Elghariani, University of Tripoli, Tripoli, Libya

Abstract Broadband satellite networks will be required to carry all types of IP traffic, real time interactive traffic as well as non-real time traffic, taking into considerations the need for appropriate QoS for these different traffic. This paper studies the performance of VoIP call in a private point to point GEO satellite network by testing three different voice codec techniques, which are G.726, G.729 and G.723.1. This study will be implemented by simulating voice and data traffic on a satellite environment using network simulator 2 (NS2). The relation between performance measures such as packet delay, delay variations, packet loss packet size, and number of simultaneous VoIP calls in the satellite channel will be investigated. This work shows that an implementation of VoIP over satellite network is feasible given that certain parameters are well selected and controlled such as choice of VoIP source codec, packet size, and the characteristics of TCP traffic that coexists with voice traffic.
