Abstract
The article goal is to build an interoperability system between 3G UMTS and IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. This system is able to support video conferencing applications in a way that enables UMTS users to benefit from data rates up to 54Mbps made available within WLANs. On the other hand, it enables Wireless users to benefit from extended coverage, seamless mobility, and QOS guarantees supported within UMTS. We saw potential in the interoperability system between UMTS and WLAN able to cover the delay in launching the Long Term Evolution system (LTE) for a temporary period of time. Different articles have approached this problem from different perspectives. These approaches can be classified in two basic categories: Hardware-based approaches and Software-based approaches. The Hardware approach followers intend to define hard changes in the network such as defining a GPRS Support Node between UMTS and WLAN systems to insure Corporation. Software based followers defined protocol to support handover and roaming capabilities for users. Our approach is software-based since the hardware based approach is costly and hard to implement. We defined IMS to insure UMTS-WLAN Corporation with SIP as signaling protocol to control multimedia communication sessions. We defined Mobile-IP as a handover protocol to insure smooth transition of users from network type to another. We defined Mobile Stream Control Transport Protocol (MSCTP) as a transport protocol since it is best suited for multimedia transmission over the interoperability system. At the physical later we implemented MPLS to benefit from its congestion control and load balancing characteristics. Our simulation project includes multiple scenarios to ensure service continuity for users and test the performance of the system when defining real-time Video Conferencing applications.
