A compact printed monopole antenna for ultra wideband (UWB) applications with frequency band-notched characteristics is proposed and investigated. The antenna consists of a circular-shaped structure and an inverted isosceles trapezoid structure, which are combined as the radiator and fed by microstrip line. A thin open-ended slit with the length about one quarter guided wave is loaded on the radiator to realise the effective frequency notch function. For validation, a prototype is fabricated and tested. The performance of this frequency-notched printed UWB antenna is verified and characterized. The measured results confirm the proposed UWB antenna design can achieve band-notched feature at desired frequency range.
