Abstract |
Dual (X and Ka) band downlink operation is highly desirable for scientific satellite missions to facilitate high data rate transmission. A compact dual-band primary radiator has been developed and prototyped for feeding satellite-borne Cassegrain reflector antennas. The radiator consisted of a sequentially-rotated four-element patch antenna array for X-band and a four-element axial-mode helical antenna array for Ka band. Each of the X-band patches was rectangular and fed from its outermost vertex with an L-shape probe to produce circular polarization with high cross polarization discrimination (XPD). The prototype demonstrated satisfactory performances―VSWR, radiation pattern, and XPD―and validity of the design. Significant reduction of size and weight was achieved in comparison with a conventional radiator comprising a corrugated horn and a disk-on-rod antenna. |
